I'm Drinking More...

Water that is! Staying hydrated is really important, especially if you’re going through a heat wave like we are here in Philly. It’s supposed to be in the 90’s through the weekend and apparently this isn’t the last heat wave we’ll be seeing this summer either. So as the weather practically leeches all liquid from my body the second I walk outside, I need to make sure I drink plenty of water. I had a friend several years ago who was never without her giant water bottle wherever we went which inspired me to start trying to do the same. She was also the first one to have to stop to use the bathroom on a road trip, but I don’t think that far in advance. So generally speaking I am pretty good at making sure I drink my daily requirement. I have my own trusty water bottle on my desk that I fill up regularly and I try to remember to drink water before eating something when my tummy says I need a snack before lunch.
But right now I’m just sick of drinking water, it’s boring and I want something with a little flavor. Today is just one of those days where the plants on my desk drink more water then I do because I fill up my bottle and I just don’t feel like drinking it. Or what about those of you who don’t particularly like drinking water in the first place? Happily I have found good alternatives that help me stay hydrated without loading down what I drink with unnecessary sugar or leaving me with cotton mouth.
1. Lemon slices, or limes, or oranges, add a little bit of flavor to boring water and gives me a refreshing change of flavor. I’ll cut up a lemon and bring it to work in a zip loc bag to add to my water throughout the week. Lemons also aid in digestion.
2. Crystal Light started making on the go packets with only 5 calories and no sugar per serving which I’ll use to liven up my water. Usually though they’re a little to strong for me so I use a little bit at a time and it still ads a flavor kick my water. Sometimes I can make one little packet last a whole week!
3. Flavored Seltzer water is one of my new favorite things to keep on hand at home. Even when I’m drinking my water like a champ at work, I still should drink it when I’m home too. Having a carbonated form of water has also helped to keep me away from drinking soda too. It’s cheap and comes in many different flavors ranging from lemon to raspberry.
4. Watering down your juice can also increase your intake. Make sure you are drinking 100% juice and not something that’s mostly sugar and artificial flavors and mix equal parts juice with water. I’ve found that most juices have a flavor strong enough to not taste the least bit diluted.
So, stay in the air conditioning as much as possible when it’s staggeringly hot outside. But when you just have to go outdoors make sure you have a bottle of something that’s going to replenish your fluids. My bottle will definitely be joining me tonight while I cheer my husband and his softball team on in the playoffs; it’s just too gross out there without it.
